All of the information below pertains to vehicles titled in VIRGINIA; other states are not covered by this guide.

Payday loan, bank loan, or liens - The best course of action here is to PAY IT OFF! however sometimes even when you try to surrender the vehicle the lender won't come get it. If this is your situation you can apply for a title using the Abandoned Vehicle Process (AVP) on DMVNow.com.  The titled owner and lien holder will get a letter in the mail informing them that the abandoned vehicle must be removed by a set date or they will be surrendering rights to the abandoned vehicle. After a waiting period, you will be able to apply for a title in your name, free and clear!

Lost the title - In most cases, you can simply visit any DMV branch office and request a copy of your title. If it's been over two years it helps to have your vehicles VIN number allowing them to search for the vehicle more easily.

Abandoned vehicles or cars left on your property - for an extended period of time or cars you mistakenly purchased without a title. As mentioned earlier, the Abandoned Vehicle Process (AVP) would be your best course of action if the vehicle can remain where it is for the 30 - 50-day process needed to get a title this way. To use the Abandoned Vehicle Process (AVP) visit www.DMVNow.com. The titled owner and lien holder will get a letter in the mail informing them that the abandoned vehicle must be removed by a set date or they will be surrendering rights to it. After a waiting period, you will be able to apply for a title in your name, free and clear!

Money is owed to you for work you have performed - on a vehicle or for storing it. It is possible to get a title in situations like these but there is a process that you must go thru to do it. This is called a Mechanics Storage Lien (MSL) ad it cannot be performed solely online. You will need to visit a branch office with the vehicles VIN and they will walk you thru the process.

Not worried about "selling" a vehicle, you just need it GONE and right NOW - If it needs to be removed immediately the best course of action would be to call a local towing company and have it towed, you can't "sell" a car without a title. However, most towing companies can remove them for you free of charge.
